Project 1: Award-Winning Resident Two-Story Addition

2006 Chrysalis Award for Best Room Addition $250,000 and over.

2005 CotY: National Regional Award Best Kitchen Remodel over $100,000; Metro DC Chapter Best Residential Addition over $250,000.

“Life-altering!” was the resounding statement of approval these active homeowners made after enjoying an expansive renovation. They had a busy social life and a desire to entertain in their home, but dreams of extending hospitality to even a small group were thwarted by a home that was inadequate with regards to space and design, and natural light.

The second story great room addition, with a full kitchen and dining room remodel, creates a dramatic and powerful impact as one enters the front door. The eye is drawn to a window wall with lofty views of the private wooded lot beyond.

The way the grade drops in the back gives a sense of treetop living, while a soft natural light cascades into the new great room. The remodeled kitchen opens to the great room looking on to the new fireplace, as well as the changing seasons beyond the windows. Dining options range from casual counter dining to formal elegance in the dining room. The new space easily accommodates large crowds and the kitchen is geared up for entertaining with an oversized range and refrigerator/freezer. The cathedral ceiling enhances the feeling of spaciousness and provides for extra-tall cabinet space in the kitchen and in the pantry wall. Cherished Fiestaware collectibles are displayed elegantly in lighted cabinets clearly seen from the Great Room.

The lower level of the addition almost tripled the size of the recreation room. A wall of windows and doors bathes the entire area of this once dark and unwelcoming space with filtered natural light, and provides access to the new stone patio and hot tub area.

The fireplace’s curved raised-hearth is mirrored in the niche that frames the large-screen plasma TV. Two additional niches were designed for the display of southwestern art and pottery collected from the homeowner’s travels. A new wet bar with under-counter refrigerator and billiards area completes the recreation room. The flagstone patio with curved dry-stack stonewalls just outside the recreation room door was designed as an outdoor living space. The natural materials and soothing sounds of the waterfall and Koi Pond create a sense of serenity that is in harmony with nature. Craftsman-style design elements are reflected in the window grilles, light fixtures and in the custom-built handrail detailing.

The homeowners were thrilled with the transformation to their home and feel that the new space more than meets their lifestyle needs.
