Project 5: Whole House Remodel

2002 Coty: Metro DC Chapter Best Whole House Remodel

When the current owners purchased their home, they had fallen in love with the beautiful lot at the end of a gravel road, yet they knew the tiny house would not meet the needs of their growing family.

The small, outdated kitchen was located at the front of the home with no access to the backyard where all the outdoor activity happened. There was confusion over which door was the front door. The home's position on the lot caused an exceedingly tight parking and turnaround for vehicles.

The project began with an addition built on the side of the home to accommodate a large new kitchen/dining area that opens to a family room with a fireplace. The new recreation room at the lower level also has a guest bedroom and full bath.

A new screened-porch was added to the rear of the home and circular stone patios were added to the back and front of the home that complement the new stucco and stone exterior of this remodeling project. The front door was relocated so it could be accessed from the new front porch. The newly landscaped stone patio at the front of the home enhances curb appeal and helps to direct vehicles to redesigned parking and turnaround. Finally, the project was completed with a remodeled master suite and the addition of a master bath.

The end result: A beautiful and functional home that meets the lifestyle of this active family. The kitchen, which is the heart of this home, is in the center of an open floor plan with views of the backyard to monitor children's activities and of visitors approaching the front entrance. The company of others in different areas of the home may be enjoyed from the kitchen as well as views of both fireplaces.

None of the rooms in this open floor plan are so large as to diminish the cozy atmosphere, yet the rooms are full of natural light and spacious enough to handle large crowds. There is no mistake as to where the front door is. This home is the reality of the vision that sustained this family through the three phases of their remodeling project and they are thrilled.
