Project 9: Award-Winning Exterior Remodel

2001 Chrysalis: Best Exterior Facelift

A lovely neighborhood in Mclean, Virginia features well-built homes on beautiful lots, but the owners of this particular home felt their property was too plain and they desired an expanded entry with “street presence”. They also wanted to correct a problem with the entrance, which opened directly into the center hall, allowing winter’s freezing weather to hit them as they greeted guests at the front door.

An elegant entry vestibule was designed to enhance the existing architecture of the home. The vestibule creates an air lock that offers protection from bad weather and addresses the owner’s concerns for climate control at the front entrance.

The home is now approached from a new custom brick walkway and patio. The same brick was used to match theexisting home and dining room extension that ties into the new vestibule. This creates a sense of balance and scale to the front facade.

The owners are pleased that their home is visually distinctive from any other homes in the neighborhood, while remaining in keeping with the overall traditional architecture of the neighborhood.
